Revision Hip Replacement Surgery
78 years old Female patient, had a simple fall while walking and broke her Right Hip Joint. She underwent a Hip Hemi-Replacement Surgery and resumed her daily activities. But to her bad luck she again had a fall and this time she came with broken metal stem along with broken bone. She was advised a Revision Total Hip Replacement Surgery which is a very challenging operation and far more complex than doing a Primary Hip Replacement surgery. The biggest challenge was to remove the broken stem from the bone which was firmly fixed using a bone cement. She underwent Revision Total Hip Replacement Surgery at Ratan Hospital in which the previous broken stem was removed using a Special Osteotomy (Surgically created Fracture) and a special Revision Stem (Solution®, DePuy- USA) and a cup was used to reconstruct her hip joint. And four months following the revision surgery she was happily back to her life with no abnormality in walking and near normal range of movements. This was only possible due to the expertise, experience and infrastructure available at Ratan Hospital for handling such Complex Cases.
Revision Knee Replacement Surgery
70 years old active male patient with osteo- arthritis in both his knee joints underwent Bilateral Total Knee Replacement Surgery. 7 years later his left knee replacement failed (there was loosening of metal joint from bone - which is the commonest cause of failure after Total Knee Replacement). He required a Revision Knee Replacement surgery which is a very complex procedure. Even at the age of 70 years he was a very active person who wanted to get his mobility back. So he underwent Revision Total Knee Replacement Surgery at Ratan Hospital in which his previous joint was removedusing specialized instruments and a new Joint specifically designed for such situation was re- fixed using special long stems. Revision Joint Replacement surgeries are totally different from Primary Joint Replacement Surgeries and require special expertise, appropriate infrastructure and availability of a dedicated team of Revision Joint Replacement Surgeon, Expert Anesthetist trained in Regional Blocks, Pain Management Consultant and a Physiotherapist, which we have at Ratan Hospital.
Bilateral Simultaneous TKR
61 years old Female patient* had Severe Osteoarthritis of both her Knees since 5 years. She was otherwise healthy and active lady but due to her severe knee pain she was finding it extremely difficult to walk properly, climb stairs and do activities of her daily living. She was getting more and more dependent on others for getting her regular work done. There was a constant fear of falling due to her unstable knees. More than knee pain, her loss of independence was her major concern. She underwent Total Knee Replacement Surgery for both her knees at the same time under same anesthesia at Ratan Hospital. She could walk on the very next day after the surgery and was discharged after five days of hospital stay. She is back to her active life with excellent movement at both her knees and is no more dependent on others. Doing Bilateral Knee Replacement at the same time requires special surgical expertise, vast experience, modern anesthesia and pain management equipment and an aggressive physiotherapy protocol.
